Choosing A Mentor

Written by Aaron Schlag

Mentors...... Such an overused and abused term. So many "Mentors" use this label as a chance to charge way too much for their "help," their "systems" and "strategies," and honestly give you very little in return.

Being a mentor to multiple very successful high level students, I have spoken to so many students of mine that have invested in mentoring and have been left disappointed and with less money in their pocket!

All of that said, the right mentor is integral to your growth in business and life! We are the sum of the five people we hang with the most, so it is very important that one or two of those five you are hanging with are high-level people/mentors that are looking out for your growth and helping you and pushing you into the uncomfortable waters of growth!

A mentor’s success always dictates how good they are at business, but that is not the only piece of the puzzle that matters when choosing the right person to pay to hold you accountable, teach you specifics in your business and be your teacher in those specific aspects for which you have hired them.

The top three things I recommend looking for in a mentor

  • Communication
  • Personality
  • Values

Communication

So many people are very successful at their craft, but not all are able to effectively communicate how they got from point A to point B. You always want to look for someone that is not only very good at what they have done to get to where they are in their particular field of business that you are wanting to learn, but someone that is able and has the heart and ability to teach and communicate the methods, systems, and actions it takes for you to get there as well!

Personality

I have seen some of the greatest mentors and communicators that are amazing at doing what they do, but have a personality that just doesn’t mesh with a potential student! In this particular area it is good to ask yourself what you are looking for. Are you looking for someone with a similar personality as yours but that is successful at what you are wanting to learn? Perhaps you are looking for someone that is opposite of your personality that you can learn specific traits from to further challenge yourself in growth!

I recommend a great personality test from The Predictive Index

It will help you further understand who you are and how to grow!

Values

Last but not least, values that align with you and yours are so important when you choose your mentor. For example, if you are a single person wanting to spend 60 to 80 hours per week on your business and development, it might not be in your best interest to choose a mentor that, although they are successful, has many responsibilities outside of their business and believes in major work/life balance!

Values are the key foundation that you will build off of when you are growing and developing in your life and business. Compromising your values will lead you to compromising your happiness and flow!

Always find someone that is:

A. Compatible and in alignment with your values and

B. Is further down the road of success in the area(s) that you want to learn and grow into.
